As the founder and owner of Horizon Controls Group, Mike’s active expertise spans a broad spectrum of services in the digital process automation arena, including front end studies, capital cost estimating, project management, digital transformation consulting and automation training. Mike’s entrepreneurial spirit combined with his desire to deliver a difference to our clients and our team members motivated him to establish Horizon Controls Group. In 2017 Mike established the International Academy of Automation Engineering® and also acts as a board member for a technology organization and non-profits. When not working, Mike enjoys travel and being a spectator of all sports with a particular interest in soccer and rugby.

Gemma Doyle
Chief Operations Officer

Gemma is a passionate professional leader with 20+ years’ experience in delivering solutions in high-paced organizations. Gemma’s tenure with the Horizon Controls Group of companies spans over 10 years. As the Chief Operating Officer, Gemma oversees the organization’s ongoing operations and procedures with responsibility for the efficiency of the HCG businesses. Gemma is very focused on HCG’s strategic planning, oversight and coordination to improve effectiveness, productivity, performance and functionality to drive extensive and sustainable growth. An innovative thinker with a proven ability to analyze and execute business objectives pertaining to clients, projects, talent acquisition, talent succession, learning and development, etc. Gemma loves the outdoors and is a keen explorer, she is also generous with reading material recommendations.

Scott Sommer

Scott Sommer
Director, Automation Engineering Professional Development

Scott has been invested in the design, programming, installation, and maintenance of process automation systems for 40 years. He has experience across multiple industries and has demonstrated expertise in many aspects of digital automation, including modular batch control (ISA88), industrial wireless (ISA100), and systems interoperability. In Scott’s role as Director, Automation Engineering Professional Development, he is expanding Horizon Control Group’s portfolio of internal and external digital automation training courses and programs. Scott is a very active member and division leader for the International Society of Automation, where he also a certified ISA Trainer. He is also a Commissioner for ABET, the worldwide organization which accredits university engineering programs. In his off-hours, Scott enjoys brewing beer and spending time with family and friends.

Bryce Stewart
Technical Sales Manager

As Technical Sales Manager of Horizon Controls Group, Bryce leverages past roles at large biopharmaceutical companies. Bryce’s role in automation leadership supporting both day to day operations and capital projects to supply tailored solutions for HCG’s clients. Bryce boasts experience and expertise in DCS and PLC implementation, batch reporting and data acquisition/visualization including: Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell, Informetric Systems InfoBatch, OSIsoft PI, Umetrics SIMCA Online. Still an engineer at heart, Bryce has been a digital evangelist since the very beginning of his career and wholeheartedly believes in the immense value that digitalization and future-ready technologies will bring to the manufacturing industry. Outside of work Bryce enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter, watching sports, and collecting sneakers.

Ian McCarthy

Ian McCarthy
European Sales Director

As the European Sales Director with Horizon Controls Group, Ian is responsible for business development for the European area of business for HCG. Ian spent the last 10 years working within the industrial automation sector in the UK and Middle East. Ian’s expertise is primarily in DCS, PLC, Digital Transformation, IIoT and Process Innovation across multiple industries including Life Science. Ian holds a MSc in Advanced Engineering Design and Mechatronics from Brunel University London and a Bachelor of Engineering in Sustainable Energy Engineering from Cork Institute of Technology. Outside of work, Ian enjoys the occasional golf outing but is still shooting over 100. He is also a keen football and rugby fan.
